Luxor is about 650 km south of Cairo, along the Nile. Almost every Egypt itinerary includes this trip, and there are three realistic ways to make it.

Flying

The fastest option. Flights run daily, but add the trips to and from both airports and the check-in time, and it still takes about half a day. Ideal when your time in Egypt is short.

The train

Daytime trains follow the Nile through farmland and villages, a view of Egypt you don't get from the air. The overnight sleeper saves a hotel night: you board in Cairo in the evening and wake up near Luxor. Book sleeper cabins well ahead in the high season.

A private driver

The most flexible choice. You leave from your hotel when you're ready, stop when you want, and arrive at your hotel door with no luggage handling in between. Split between a family or a small group, it can be good value.

Book a private driver between cities at a fixed price, with pickup from your hotel or any address.

Once you're in Luxor

Luxor rewards an early start: the East Bank temples of Karnak and Luxor, then the West Bank for the Valley of the Kings and Hatshepsut's temple. A guide makes sense of what you're seeing and gets you there before the heat and the crowds.

Explore Luxor's temples and tombs with a local guide in a small group.
